Quick Overview

GrainTracker has it origins as an excel spreadsheet that has evolved over the past 10 years of working with consulting customers. Each year seemed to call for a new and improved version to provide ever more information in what hopefully was a pretty easy to read layout. It finally got to a point that emailing the spreadsheet back and forth between me and the customer really was not working as neither of us really knew the “correct” sales figures at the same time. That started the quest on how best to put the spreadsheet on the web. After taking a lot longer than it should have, I finally came to the realization that I was not going to be able to do it myself and that spreadsheets and the web are not always compatible.

During the process of turning the spreadsheet into GrainTracker, one of my focal points was to keep it as simple as possible. I understand the different comfort and skill levels of farmers using the computer as well as that some are going to be on a dial up internet while others on high speed internet. So with that in mind, we have kept the graphics to a minimum and made the entry an easy as fill-in-the-form format; two finger typing at the best.

After much discussion, it was decided to go with a web based program versus a computer based program for several reasons:

  • First, it was the simplicity of the web; there is no need for downloading programs and worrying about the system requirements of a person’s computer. Security is not an issue as for the server secures the data and a personal password and login are required to enter the website.
  • The browser based web program also provides flexibility as to from where the information can be accessed. With a web based program you can access the information anywhere there is a computer connected to the internet. This flexibility allows for the customer to see his information from home, the office or allows more than one person access to the sales information which is especially nice for partners or other family members involved in the marketing instead of being on just one computer.
  • It solved the problem of both a consultant and their customers having access to the same information in “real time” so to speak. The sales information is kept in one spot and all additions are viewed in real time. We can be on the phone, and if one of us enters data, all the other has to do is refresh his page and he will be able to see the changes.
  • It also took care of another concern regarding data backup. The servers where GrainTracker is hosted are backed up and the data should be safer than most data kept on a home computer.

GrainTracker is broken down into several easy-to-follow steps.

  1. The first step is when you first come to the website. You will be asked to set up a marketing plan for each crop and that is done through entering planting intentions and expected crop yield information, how much will be sold ahead of harvest and the number of selling increments.
  2. The second step is the recording of sales when they are made. You may also view the progress of your sales.
  3. Step three is the entering of post harvest information, harvested acres, actual yield and the number of increments to sell the remaining bushels.
  4. Step four involves the recording of the final sales.

It is that simple.

Sales reports can be printed at anytime for your records, sharing with someone else or to communicate with the truck driver regarding the delivery locations and dates.
