  6. Do I set up the summaries by the name of the grain or the name of the farm?
This is one of the decisions to be made and depends on whether you need information separate for landlords to review or if you want to market your grain by looking at it from a whole picture. You can set up the marketing plan to reflect both ways and make double entries.

  7. Will my yearly subscription be automatically renewed?
No. You shall receive an email prior to the end of the subscription year asking for you to renew at GrainTracker.com or toll-free by phone, 866-509-6821.

  8. How do I renew my yearly subscription?
To renew your subscription, simply follow the same sign-up steps that you did initially, at the Sign Up page. IMPORTANT: Make sure you use the same email address that is currently your username when you renew. Otherwise, the system will create a new account instead of renewing your old one, and you will have to re-enter your data.

  9. How do I keep track of bushels that I carried over from last year?
You could name a crop plan something like, 2007 Old Crop Corn and track it just like you would your new crops.

The Philosophy behind GrainTracker

Making incremental sales over several market peaks during the spring marketing period is the foundation behind the marketing plan of GrainTracker. The ability to know at a glance where you are in your marketing is critical in making good marketing decisions.

Suggestions on how to create a Market Plan

The hardest part of forming any marketing plan is determining how much one wants to forward price during the spring markets. One must be willing and able to execute the plan, so take a moment and be honest and make this very important determination on what kind of marketer you want to be. One must determine whether to take an aggressive or conservative approach in regards to a sales pattern. There is no right or wrong, just what is right for you. Look at what you have been doing in the past, has it worked for you? If you decide to make a change, make a small change and then re-evaluate the following year.

An aggressive forward seller perspective includes: higher markets are not as much of a concern as lower markets, you are making your desired return on investment, and "lost opportunity" income is not a major concern.

A conservative forward seller perceives "lost opportunity" income is of more concern than lower markets.

Once a percentage is determined for forward sales, the rest of the plan comes together very quickly. Four (4) increments is a neutral balance. Aggressive sale increments would be in the three (3) increment area and conservative sale increments would be in the 5-6 increment area.

Old crop sales (post harvest sales) are determined by the length of time of storage with the increment breakdown of the remaining bushels. To finish the marketing by late winter or early spring, use 2-3 increments; summer marketing may use 4 or more increments.

After signing into your account...

After signing into your account, you will create a marketing plan for each crop. You will be asked for:

  • your estimated acreage that will be planted
  • conservative average yield
  • number of bushels you will use for feeding purposes and available storage
  • percentage you wish to forward price
  • number of sales increments (3 would be aggressive and 7 would be conservative with 4 being the default)
  • cost of a put.

After your first visit, your logging in will be directed to your market plan(s) summary page. From there, clicking on the name of the desired crop, will take you to the detailed page of each marketing plan where you can:

  • add sales
  • edit your marketing plan data

Remember, after harvest, you will edit your marketing plan and put in your:

  • actual yields
  • choose the number of selling increments you wish to use on the remainder of the crop

When you are adding a sale, you will have the opportunity to enter it:

  • either as a cash sale
  • futures only sale
  • Basis
  • location of sale
  • delivery month
  • and a general comment area for extra notes
